Hardsubs are rendered right into the video so you can be sure they will show exactly as rendered in any player, on any device. Plus, you can add softsubs to a video without reencoding, preserving image quality. They are not rendered at encode time and so are not affected by any fuzziness or lack of quality that your video could experience. Softsubs can be turned on or off at any time. These are more common inside mkv files like anime fansubs. Files of type ass/ssa are substation alpha files, containing more advanced subtitle information like fonts, location, and karaoke timing. Sub is probably the easiest to work with. Filetypes srt/sub/sup are very basic subtitle files that just about any transcoder will know what to do with. Subtitles are held in files created by hand or ocr’d from video. iPod Touch/Quicktime now has support for softsubs as well as MPlayer, VLC, etc. There are two kinds of subtitles: hardsubs, which are rendered right onto your video file, and softsubs, basically plain text bundled into the file and shown at run time. ![]() There’s a great post on this subject by TheOmnipotentLemur, here.
